About A-1 Action Nursing Care®

A Dream & History

A-1 Action Nursing Care® came into existence at my dining room table, born out of the belief that individuals could be better served with nursing care in their own homes, when it was appropriate, rather than in a facility. The challenge being to provide patients with qualified caring and compassionate caregivers. I had been working off and on at various nursing facilities and in homes and had observed that many of the patients were very nervous and uncomfortable outside of their known environment. I began to believe that if I could find qualified caring and compassionate caregivers, some of these patients could remain in their own homes for treatment or recovery.

Thus, a dream was born...

In 1978, at my dining room table, I initiated this dream. First I searched to find qualified, loving and professional nursing assistants, CNA's, LPN’s and RN’s who fit our criteria for caregivers. After we secured a confident and conscientious nursing contingent we were able to open for business. Since I was involved 24/7 with our nursing staff, I needed a reliable and knowledgeable person to answer the phone to give out information to the public and perspective clients. Taking all this into consideration, who else would be better for this job than my own mother.

My mother Eva Elizabeth Swann Johnson was born on August 30, 1908 in Cameron, West Virginia. She was one of 10 children and went on to graduate with her sister in 1932 from Reynolds Memorial Hospital Professional School of Nursing. Not only did she bring encouragement and professional knowledge to the agency she became, in the beginning, our answering service and did nursing care for the agency until she was eighty one years old, and was always available for consultation.

Twelve and a half months after starting my nursing agency my youngest son, Mark came to work with me in the management end of my expanding company. This was the start of our fourth generation of our family providing private-duty nursing care. So much has happened and changed while we have been serving the Washington Metropolitan area caring for every walk of life including dignitaries, diplomats and historians. And in January of 1995 our immediate family circle was complete when my oldest son, Robert joined our organization to assist in billing, payroll and scheduling. We do employee some excellent outside office helpers whom have worked with us for a very long time, we feel like they are part of our extended family; therefore we are truly a family owned and operated company.

Our work continues...

Unfortunately, my very vibrant mother lived to be ninety four and passed away on October 15, 2002 at her home in Burtonsville, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost seventy years, Reverend John R. Johnson. She is sorrowfully missed by her family, friends and the patients she served.
